Working Together as a Community for Our Schools

November 1, 2008

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Many of the concerns reflected in society at large are driving concerns in our schools. We are concerned about containing costs while addressing the educational needs of our very diverse student population. This is an awesome task, but we are up to the challenge.

We have been working on several district initiatives:

(1) In October the district took another step to bring a YMCA to the Riverhead community by discussing the possibility of leasing a small portion of existing land to them. This would not only give our youngsters a safe place for recreation, but our partnership with the YMCA would enhance our facilities by providing swim instruction to all our third graders, supporting a high school swim team and providing classes for pre-K.

(2) Our Board of Education and Facilities Administrator began the process of establishing an Energy Performance Contract for the district. An Energy Performance Contract gives school districts the means to make improvements to their energy infrastructure (boilers, lighting, windows, etc.) and then utilizes the money the district saves on energy costs to pay for the improvements. We expect we will implement this project this spring.

(3) Additionally, we are constantly looking for ways to work together with financial, educational, and research institutions in our effort to provide our students with valuable learning experiences. Our new financial literacy classes and an expanded science research program at the high school will give our students more real-life learning opportunities. The solar research our students conducted last year is just one of the many ways a high school experience can affect our future as we struggle as a nation to find sustainable energy resources.

I hope you had an opportunity to participate in conferences with your child’s teacher in November. Our task together requires that we all stay focused on the learning needs of our children, while remaining cognizant of the challenges in our community and our nation.

Sincerely,
Dr. Diane B. Scricca
