PE Suffolk Zone Award Winners

(December 2008) CONGRATULATIONS to this year’s recipients of the prestigious New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance – Suffolk Zone Award, Amelia Czelatka & Timothy Velys, both seniors at Riverhead High School. The Suffolk Zone Award criteria demand a high level of physical fitness, strong participation in school and community activities, evidence of leadership roles, community involvement and academic excellence.

“Amelia Czelatka is a very dedicated student athlete with a tremendous drive for success. She displays a high degree of integrity and has developed as a natural leader because of the high standard of excellence she demands of herself,” states Bill Groth, Director of Physical Education.

Amelia says, “Physical education has helped me develop and grow as an athlete. It has been a very positive and exciting experience.”

Amelia is a four-year recipient of the Presidential Physical Fitness Award. She is also the captain of the varsity soccer team and active in softball, winter track and cheerleading.

She is a member of eight HS clubs, in the National Foreign Language Honor Society, the National Honor Society, and a Gold Renaissance recipient. She maintains a 99.75 weighted GPA. Her plans for college next year are still undecided.

“Timothy Velys epitomizes everything a student, an athlete and a gentleman should be. He is the type of person that every coach, teacher, parent and friend wishes to have in their life,” states Mr. Groth.

Tim was a captain and the quarterback of this year’s Blue Waves football team, which won both the LI Championship and the Rutgers Trophy.  He is also a four-year letterman and captain of the Blue Waves baseball team, on which he is both a pitcher and outfielder.

Tim is active in the Wave-to-Wave mentoring program, the Relay for Life, and the Interact Club. He is in both the National Honor Society and the National Foreign Language Honor Society and carries a 99.2 GPA. Tim hopes to attend Holy Cross College and study business.

Congratulations to these outstanding scholar/athletes!
